Julian Merluzzi is a Chicago-based drummer and percussionist. He graduated from DePaul University with a BM in Jazz Studies. Through his love of music and the drum set, he has been mentored by many musicians in Chicago such as Greg Essig, Phil Beale, Ernie Adams, and Dana Hall. During his time at DePaul University, he had the opportunity to perform in a variety of small and large ensembles. These ensembles were coached by Dana Hall, Typhanie Coller, Sharel Cassity, and other DePaul faculty. Since graduating, he continues to play with his friends and musical collaborators in groups like the Jack Smith Trio, Jam City Collective, and the Dylan Barnett Quintet. This collection of musical experiences allowed him to harness versatility behind the drum set and play many different types of music.
Along with performing, Julian values mentorship and fostering good teaching relationships. He believes in creating a good musical foundation for all of his students. Above all, he aims for the student’s interests and music that keeps them inspired to play the instrument every day.
